this morning after an hour of pilates, i headed off to the trails to pull my tire. one hour up before turning around and running back down. to get my motivation for this i watched "Running on the Sun" last night with my family. this is a documentary movie about running the Badwater Ultra Marathon. i draw strength from quotes like these that just crack me up.
"Gabriel, slow down. you are running too fast. Gabriel, Gabriel...
" ...it was 135 degrees, i'll have ya know"
"I think it was the cheese"
"It's been two hours, where's my soup?"
back to my run...as i made my way up the hill, i put aside my worries and enjoyed the morning. the time seemed to just melt away. half way up i past some hikers coming down. they asked me what i was training for. i told them that i was training for Western States. they both seemed impressed and knew a little bit about AC. they then asked me what the farthest that i had ever run. i answered them "100 miles". they then wanted to know what i called my tire. i said that i call it "cute".
while answering these questions, i was surprised that i was able to do so with conviction. i said it like i meant it and at that moment i knew that i did mean it. i was not pretending that i was going to run 100 miles. i wasn't dreaming it. i wasn't being a poser. i was the real deal! a Western States finisher in the making. and you know what? that felt really great!
my hour up went by with good effort and much enjoyment! it only took me 30 minutes to return down. while running down i realized that i was no longer pulling the tire but it was gliding behind me and i was running with the exuberance of youth. full of joy and laughter in every step.
all trails lead to Auburn!
