two hours ago at the bottom of the trail, i was in the desert.
my trail mate (name coined by Baz) told me that we would be running 20 miles for our long run. i very matter-of-factly told him that we would not. how could i run 20 miles and then a 50k in just a week? he had already decided in his mind that he would lie to me if needed to get that mileage in. well he didn't have to thanks to Gabor who told me in very colorful terms that i needed to start increasing my mileage. so 20 miles it was.
20 happens to be a number that i get hung up on. i get that from my marathon days and the dreaded 20 mile long runs. today was "cake". a dream hike up from the desert floor into a chilly wooded wonderland that is foreign and enticing to me. we hiked and ran 7 miles up where we had to put on more clothes. it's always a big deal when i see snow. the wind was really blowing and that was strange knowing that just below, it was a calm warm day. we could see all the mountain peaks to the east and once again when we were running on the Main Divide we could see the ocean.
the Warrior Society (OC based mt. bike club) were having some big mountain bike race and as we sat and had our lunch we could see the riders coming off the switchbacks of the Upper Holy Jim Trail. we ran to the trail head of the Lower Holy Jim Trail before turning around for our descent down the Indian Truck Trail. it was a nice run down with no problems. we both finished up feeling strong and wanting more. i really need to stop wasting energy on being anxious and instead, embrace this journey of progression.
all trails lead to Auburn!
