Back on the trails again. Last Saturday I set out on a training run with George. It was a good 10 miles in the mountains with some good climbs. I wanted to take advantage of the fluid down hill that I was on so I talked George into going extra. He thought it would only be 16 miles but as we hit the hill Holy Jim I realized that we had mistaken the distance and it was more like 22 miles. I ran out of water before we even got to the top of the hill. George tried to save his water for me but it was going to be a miserable hike for the next several hours with what little water we had left. Not enough to get to the end that was for sure! Between laughter and tears, George lightens the mood with this.. "what did Laurel say to Hardy? 'Well here's another nice mess you've have gotten me into'"
Here is a picture that I took while I was lying flat on my back in hopes of recovering for the next section. I had actually called my husband to come and rescue us with two extra large cokes. But then I had a second thought and called him back and said never mind, we were going to tough it out. (bad idea)
After a few more miserable miles I informed George that the first vehicle that came by no matter what it was, motorcycle, boat or plane, that I was getting a ride. Not much traffic on the mountain fire roads but with a good 6 to 8 miles to go, some off road jeepers came our way. I asked where they were headed and they said Ortega. Great, that is on the way to my car so I got in one jeep and George got into the other.
After some minor but fun off roading, I spotted my car. A voice over the radio said that my husband had arrived. We radioed back and ask if he brought my coke. He did, and all was right in the world.
Mt. Disappointment is this weekend. I have run this race every year since it has started. Gonna be hot! Gonna be hard! Gonna be great!!!
