Fast Packing Avalon

Two years ago I ran the Avalon Benefit Run. That is 50 miles through the interior of Catalina Island. It was a cold day with lots of mud and some rain. It was the first 50 miler that I had completed.

This year it was a bit different. I carried a pack that weighed anywhere between 8 to 12 pounds for 50 miles. I did this with my friend George because we are training for the Marathon Des Sables. This was a perfect training day with gorgeous weather and fun people. Our only mishaps were George’s blisters and the fact that I hated running with my pack and have determined that it just won’t work for MDS. Having never trained with a pack like this before, 50 miles was a big undertaking and I am really happy with myself for sticking with it and not dumping the pack at one of the aid stations to continue on with out it. I was unable to do much running with it because it just did not sit well and bounced on my shoulders. I was able to make adjustments along the way but nothing suitable for the six day trek across the Sahara that I will be doing in March.

for pictures and my report read more here.
