Alone we can do so little,
together we can do so much!
together we can do so much!
Dear friends,
When I tried and failed at my very first ultra event, my path crossed with a most remarkable woman. Even before I personally got in contact with her I researched her achievements and she hit me hard on a very personal level. Sometimes you just know when someone comes into your life for a reason. And sometimes timing is key.
After first becoming acquainted with Lisa Smith-Batchen, it would be two more years before a friendship was born. Last year I was asked to crew for her during her second Badwater Double. This was an "oh wow" moment and the friendships that I made during that time will never be forgotten.
This year I have been asked back to crew for Lisa. She is running Badwater for her ninth official time, but this year she is adding a dramatic twist. Lisa and her crew will be starting from Las Vegas and Lisa will be running all the way to Badwater. Then she will start the official race after already running approx 145 miles. Lisa will be back to the desert again in October were she will ride in the 508 bike race and after finishing she will be only the third women to ever complete the Desert Cup. This consists of finishing both the Badwater Ultra Marathon and the 508 in the same season. This will give Lisa the 810 miles (and some change) that has become the title of her dream.
Pictured above is a very special quilt that I made in honor of Lisa. It will be auctioned off on e-bay at the end of her 810. Chis Kostman who is the race director of the Badwater Ultra Marathon very kindly donated the t-shirts that were used. Linda Schaefer donated her time and top stitched the quilt together for Lisa.
Please follow the journey of Lisa's quilt which has been named "Random Acts of Kindness" as we travel with it all across the desert and to the summit of Mt. Whitney. All of these many miles that Lisa will be running is to raise money for the children in Africa who have been orphaned by Aids.
