On the swinging bridge before the climb up to Devil's Thumb
It is a Monday morning. I look down to check out my SMO. I have been wearing it almost every day since I have gotten it. Just over two weeks prior I had set out on my journey across the mountains to obtain my SMO. That stands for Shiny Metal Object otherwise known as the most coveted of buckles in the ultra running community.
Flash back to another Monday morning just six days before the most celebrated race in all of ultra running. It was the beginning of a special week. I was going to run the Western States Endurance Run from Squaw Valley to Auburn, 100 miles over some very difficult terrain. To enter this race first you have to qualify which I had done in 2006. Then I had to be lucky enough to have my name selected via lottery. I had a 24% chance of being selected. On December 2, 2006 my name was one of the few called. Now the real training must begin, but wait…. I had a few issues to deal with early on that made training difficult.

LOLOL nice
Well that was one heck of a ride, it's locked into ur memory bank....to recall anytime...that will propel you on to greater things in Ultra's & in Life.
I love the pic of you at the starting line with you waiving, it's just looks like you knew it was ur day...and you were saying "I will see ya in less then 30 hours"--haha
good job capturing the details! I can't believe how lovely you make all that pain and suffering sound. ;-) I love how you visualized the finish, over and over again. You did say "It's On", and you definitely conquered.
I'm going to have to get a couple of those movies for my girlfriends who want to start ultras. You are an inspiration!
Great report, and congrats again on your SMO.
I love the picture-race-report. Very cool!!
